More History of Fire Fighters

9/11 (kid friendly)

Fire Fighters fight fires that destroy buildings, houses and hurt people. They risk their lives so that others may be safe,

The badge of the fireman is the Maltese Cross. This Maltese Cross is a symbol of protection and a badge of honfire fighteror. Its story is hundreds of years old. It has its roots in the Knights of St. John, brave warriors who kept their brothers-in-arms safe from glass bottles filled with fire that were thrown at them during battle.

These men became our first firemen. Their heroic efforts were recognized by being awarded each a badge of honor - a cross similar to the one firemen wear today. That is the origin of the symbol that fire fighters proudly wear today.

fire fighterDid you know that back in the stage coach days, a firefighter’s best friend was a Dalmatian dog?  Back then, the Dalmatians guarded the firehouse horses, kept the horses in line by running alongside the coaches, and were a great companion for the lonely firefighters who had to live in the firehouse.

Today the Dalmatian is still a firefighter’s best friend, however the duties for a Dalmatian have changed. For example, a Dalmatian can no longer run alongside a fire truck because it is not safe, however the Dalmatian can help firefighters by finding people who are trapped in a burning building, etc.

FUN FACT: Molly Williams, an African American, was the first known female volunteer firefighter. She was a member of the Oceanus engine Company No. 11 in the city of New York. In 1818, she took her place with the men and helped pull the pumper truck to fires through the snow in a 1818 blizzard. Molly fought fires wearing a calico dress and checked apron

Overall, the job of a firefighter is not simple and as a matter of fact it is very dangerous duty to protect our community.  fire fighter

September 11 is an example of how firefighters heroically tried to save people with every means possible. NOTE: Parents, the topic of September 11th is a very sensitive issue and difficult to explain without recalling the horrific events that took place on that day. I have provided a website which may help you address the topic in a kid friendly manner if you decide to delve into it further. Please CLICK HERE.
